4 hair myths to stop believing
Learn the truth about healthy tresses.
Whether it comes from your mates, first hairdresser, or your mum, we’ve all had bad beauty information burned into our brains.
Sure, it’s easy to believe the word on the street, but are you really getting the truth behind what’s actually good or bad for your hair?
Richard Kavanagh, ghd Australia & New Zealand creative Director, explains the logic (or lack of) of behind these four hair myths.
Myth #1: Bad hair days are part of life
Not true, says Kavanagh. Instead it’s probably an indicator of your overloaded schedule or optimism at eking out at that haircut or root touch up appointment.
“The main challenges people face would be not enough time, and not enough knowledge. Regular haircuts and colours keep your look fresh and will have you feeling better about your hair no matter what style you wear. Then comes knowing how to style your hair and what tools and products you need to create the looks to mitigate bad hair days.”
Myth #2: Heat styling everyday will wreck your locks
This one depends on the tool, according to Kavanagh.
“So long as you’re using the right tools (like ghd which uses patented tri-zone technology) and a heat protecting spray, you can feel comfortable blow drying and styling every time you wash your hair – and even restyling on the days you don’t wash it.”
Myth #3: Straightening your hair after dry shampooing will burn your strands
There have been reports that dry shampoo, the lazy-but-vein girl’s best friend, can cause hair loss – but this is down to scalp health, not from heat, says Kavanagh.
“There’s nothing in dry shampoo that would cause any damage to the hair structure when heated.
I wonder if this myth comes from the fact that most dry shampoos come in an aerosol can and the propellant is flammable?”
Myth #4: A straightener is the only tool you need
While there a numerous tricks and tutorials for using a flat iron, Kavanagh reckons you’re limiting your hair potential by relying on the one tool.
“Choose the right tool for the job! For many years we have had a complete range of the most technologically advanced heat styling tools to create any look in any hair type – from curling irons, to wave wands, contours that crimp and blow dryers and of course the super versatile platinum styler.”
